I was recently inspired by another blog that i saw feature this kind of bulletin board idea. So about a month ago i started putting things together...collecting the poems and buying the board, etc. I wanted it to be a subtle way to incorporate science in our homeschooling, without it being a hard and fast sit down lesson. More than that I also wanted it to be seasonal. The things i have featured here are flowers and birds. Appropriate, i thought, for springtime. I had the opportunity to talk to some other homeschool mom's and one mentioned that they use a lot of poetry in their schooling and that clicked for me. This family uses it to practice reading and handwriting. I printed several small simple poems that were about our topic and printed them out for the board. We also have a few that are taped to the wall by our school area that she reads on a regular basis through the week. I put it together completely the other night and introduced it the next day during school. Instant success! Not the kind that gets her jumping up and down, but the kind that makes her learn something. She was able to later that evening teach Chris what all those things were, partly by memory and some reading. It helped that the kids gave me flowers the day before for May Day. She could learn the lesson and then show me all those things on an actual flower. I think i am going to try to carry this on through out the summer...maybe monthly changing the topics.

Cool idea, Lez. I might just steal the idea and use it next year.
i take that as a high compliment sister
Leslie, the board is great!! I checked it out close up. Avery, are you learning any of these poems? I taught my Kindergarten classes the poem, "Who Has Seen the Wind?" Maybe, as the boards change, I'll see some more familiar poems.
