A friend of mine just had a baby...and what better gift is there than a quilt for said sweet baby!
I pulled out some reproduction fabric that i had...it all came in a cute little bundle from Joanns. It took me some time to settle on a layout because i did not have quite enough to make the around the world pattern totally square. So i opted to lengthen it a little and add some aunt grace to the sides to make it a little wider.
It came together quickly, and so far i have been able to keep my new years goal of doing a quilt from start to finish, no more tops lying around in WIP piles. Now of course that does not apply to the ones i have started in the past, just the ones i have started since the new year began.
Simple straight line quilting, slightly random, not really a pattern...just enough to be sure that it is securely quilted. It was such a pain to quilt...more than usual. Why? Because i now officially HATE spray baste. This one was so unusually painful and the spray baste was giving me so many problems....and because it was a small quilt the stiffness of the 505 spray made it so unruly and hard to get through the machine. 505, we are over...officially we are broken up. Pins...it is you and me from now on!!!
this will be over on Amylouwho's...have a look at all the pretty things everyone else has made this week and tell them how much you love them...comments mean a lot!!

pretty quilt! i really like reproduction prints.
what other problems have you had with basting spray? i recently purchased some to use for a large quilt. i tested it out a bit on a baby quilt and it didn't work very well. i'm not sure if it was because the quilt was sashed in a cotton/bamboo blend (the can says to use on 100% cotton fabrics). i'd really like for it to work well since i don't really feel like pin basting a queen sized quilt!
Love that pale green!
That quilt is stunning! So fresh and lovely. I made so many quilts for Annie-Rose before she was born, but my goodness they all get used heaps (and washed heaps).
I love the way we make our own rules... good on you for finishing project from go to wo. I'm intriged though, what do you have in your pile.
Such a cute quilt. Sorry to hear it gave you fits! Well, the basting spray...which I have a love/hate relationship with!
You're such a sweetheart to gift such an incredible gift to your friend and her baby!
Awesome Friday Finish!
Great finish! It looks wonderful! Handmade baby quilts are the best, much more personal.
I love/hate pins too, but I agree they work so much better.
I don't know if you did this on purpose, but those bright reds and blacks are perfect for a new baby to focus on. Because you softened it with the greens and other colors, I like it so much better than a pure red and black and white quilt.
Can I just pretend to have a baby and ask you to make me a little quilt like that?
Lovely QUILT! I have used the spray baste and haven't had trouble. Have you tried using just a "light" spray on the batting before smoothing fabric down? Your comments made me wonder.....
Very cute! I love making quilts for new babies! Nice job and way to stick to your resolution!
You have made a perfect baby quilt, soft and pretty and cheerful; I love it!
I have not used 505 for years but they have jsut started selling it in my local quilt shop. Is it very different than other brands?
Leslie, this is so pretty! Love the colors you chose. :)
so pretty, love the straight line quilting. sorry you and spray basting broke up, welcome to pin basting world though!
Oh, I admire the 'start and finish' concept !
I'm making excuses about not having the room to baste t.j.'s quilt......it's just an excuse, mind you !
I've just flat out grown lazy !
Love the baby quilt......it looks like you just found it in the attic !
Beautiful! You've just about inspired me to try out making a quilt. :)
I hate pins, but I hate spray worse. So it's the lesser of the two evils. Pretty quilt, and nice finish!
very nice job and i can tell you from experience pins are WAY!!!!!! better!!!!!!! :) cute, cute!!!
Cute! And great job working around the pattern with what you have!! I'm so impressed that you're doing your quilts start to finish - that is a hard one to master. I don't know if I could do that :)
I'm sure your friend is going to love your gift!
I love reproduction fabric and they so pretty in your quilt too.
It's a beautiful quilt and such a nice gift! I have tried the spray basting and didn't love it and then someone told me about this basting method and I really love it much more than pinning - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhwNylePFAA
Gorgeous, I'm sure your recipient will cherish it!
Very beautiful:) I also pin, I tried the spray one time and hated it. How long did this quilt take you? Just curious. I'm pretty new and it takes me a while.
Leslie, this is a gorgeous quilt. I like how you changed up the around the world pattern to make it work with the fabric you had. Gorgeous reproduction prints. Thanks for sharing.
Lovely quilt! I like the way you off set the pattern to accomidate the squares you had. It worked great!
I used 505 once, and now use Sulky. I tried June Tailor and HATED it ..
beautiful as usual. maybe I'll get preggers so you'll make me a quilt :) I had a strange spray baste experience... I used it with Zoe's cherry quilt, which I stippled, and had NO problems with anything. I also used it for the one I just finished for my Grandma, and that thing was all over the place (maybe because I used my regular foot & quilted in straight lines though). I also used less spray on the one that didn't come out as well. I think I'm going to try Anne's method next time.
What a cozy quilt - pretty colors!
Thanks for visiting me and leaving the kind comment.
I have never used spray baste -- I heard that it gums up the needle. I am the pinning type -- actually, the pin it to death type! :)
Great finish. The quilt looks lovely. I also have a love/hate relationship with basting spray. I only use it now when I make table runners. The basting process in the part of the quilting process that I detest the most.
VERY cute baby quilt - love the rectanglar look. You might try a combo of LIGHT spray for the "back to batting" then place the top and pin it.
So cute! I like how spray baste keeps everything together, but hate how it gets all over everything.
Great baby quilt and twice as great since you used your stash! This will be treasured.
there is No better gift! great job!!
Adorable quilt, very sweet gift for a new baby! I'm sorry you had trouble with the spray basting. I just used it for the first time and I love it. I guess we each have to figure out what works and just go with that. Great Friday Finish!
What a darling quilt. :o)
Your header is precious! I love all those older fabric patterns. :o)
Sincerely ~ Tricia
I have never used basting spray...I wouldn't even know where to begin. But your quilt is just gorgeous!
How very lovely for baby! Your work is so beautiful!
Very nice hat you made. Looks adorable on that sweet little girl!
Oh, yummy cake too.
Kindly, ldh
I agree - lovely quilt and what a lucky little baby to get it from you! Arlene
This is a beautiful baby quilt! Love the colors! Very well done!
You see, I had to become your newest follower, Leslie! Mostly because your blog is so inspiring(dare I admit that my "project" begins with a Q?)and I want to make quilt pillows with my scraps just like you, but also since I thought by following I'd have the most up to date news on how you fared with our "February Fury" snowstorm :)
Stay warm!!!! TJ
I wish my friends were having babies. I really want to make a boy quilt (I have 3 girls).
Lovely quilt, Leslie. I love your layout and quilting! Thank you for a little warning on spray-basting. I haven't tried that, yet...
It always amazes me how you can just whip one of these things out and make it sound so casual and easy. It's splendid!
What fabulous fabrics in the sweet little quilt.
I love it! Great color combo, and I love the simple design. Bummer about the basting issues. I've never used 505, but I like the basting spray I get at Joann's (some light blue can, I can't remember the name). I have yet to try pins, so I guess I don't know what I'm missing yet! :)
I love this! Great job....It's amazing what you can make from one little bundle!
This has turned out great! Loving those reproduction prints!
So cute. I have a friend who uses the purple aqua net hair spray, and swears by it. I haven't gotten a chance to try it out yet myself, but his quilts turn out great, so it must work LOL And it's sooo much cheaper :) Just a suggestion. Did I say that i love that quilt yet?? LOL Great job :)
