There were things we were hoping to see today as well as some unexpected treats. This great blue heron was one i knew was there because we had seen them before but i was beyond thrilled to see him in the water enjoying himself. I admit that i am a bird nerd. I would have sat there all day long until he flew away if my kids had that much patience. But honestly they were just as excited. Jumping up and down for every exciting find. As we walked along holding hands Avery said, "Mom, when I grow up we can be bird watchers together.".
This little guy in the tree is a belted kingfisher. I have not even heard of this bird before today. Good thing we had our bird identification books with us. We were all pretty thrilled since it says that this is a rare bird. How cool is that? The bird sighting of the day though was the BALD EAGLE!!! I know there is no picture...but,we were all so excited and too busy watching him that we forgot to take a picture. Jaws dropped, kids jumped up and down, there was a little squealing on my part as we watched him soar!!! We certainly were not expecting to see that today. Avery wanted to know the eagles scientific name. She is catching on with this science stuff.
Mitch loved the bugs, there were a few, and the spiders...there were enough. Yuck! He thought that this web was great...
And at the very end of the hike we found these pretty red dragonflies...see him right there in the middle.

I didn't know you were a bird girl. Next photo should be of you pointing off towards the bird... ;)
it's true...i am a bird girl. I confess.
Avery's a smart lil thing. And That web is cool (especially since there is no spider in it)... I however am in love with the dragonfly picture. I am minutely obsessed (if that's possible??) with dragonflies. I think they are beautiful. I've never seen a red one though. At work, there are always dragonflies flying around. Yeah, I love dragonflies.
Great nature pics Leslie. I love the birds too. I heard an unusual birdsong walking to my car one day this week. I could not see the bird though. I waited around for a few minutes but he never showed his feathers.
We had a heron perched on the dock out back all summer. I LOVE large birds--herons, hawks, pelicans...We're studing birds in KONOS this semester.
