It has been long enough since anyone in my family has had this that i don't even remember eating it. Mom says she used to make it when we were little. I had my usual kitchen helper, Avery, at hand to do the dumping and mixing.
Once it was all mixed we threw it in the oven for a while until it was nice and toasty. We did modify a little by adding craisins once it was all baked and mostly cooled. It was really yummy. I only made half a batch because i really held out no hope that anyone in my family would eat it.
Well, i knew Chris would but not the kids.... but,to my shock and surprise those kids are little crunchy, granola-eating, tree-huggers at heart(thank goodness). They loved it. It was gone in a day. Thy are all asking when i am going to make it again.
Granola
4 c. Oatmeal
1 c. Wheat Germ
1/2 c. Flax Seed, ground(optional)
1 c. Almonds, sliced**
1 c. Coconut
1/2 t. Salt
1 c. Powdered Milk
1 c. Oil (I used half butter and half oil here)
1 c. Honey
1/3 c. Water
1 1/2 t. Vanilla
1 c. Craisins (add after baked)**
Measure the first 7 ingredients in a large bowl. Stir to mix. Now in small bowl mix all the wet ingredients, stir. Mix the wet into your dry. Spread on two cookie sheets. Bake at 300 for 20 minutes or until lightly toasted, stirring occasionally. Watch it closely as over baking tends to dry it out. Cool just until you can handle it...now add your craisins. Store in airtight container. Serve with milk as cereal, sprinkle on ice cream or over yogurt(that was our favorite way)...or eat just as snack.
**any nuts or dried fruit can be added to your liking...sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, dried apricots, etc.**

I've never made it with the powdered milk--what do you think that does? It looks so pretty and so yummy!
Mmm I cant wait to try it!
so glad to hear that it turned out and that everyone liked it so much. I may just try it out.
Yum!! I've been looking for a good granola recipe... most of them seem so complicated. I think I will make this one this week. We love granola with our yogurt too! Mmmm!
