What do You do?

How do you begin a quilt? With a pattern or an idea? Do you start with a plan and just follow it or do you let the idea take on a life of its own? I am not often a pattern quilter. I usually hope that i have enough fabric and ideas to get me through to something ,in the end, that is not hopelessly hideous.

The idea took over this time. I started thinking i would set this off with white on both ends of the strip, but then i started wonder what it would look like if i stuck a little bit of white(about 10 inches), randomly into each strip. Now it is up to quilters fate...i am going to have to just see what i get. It is going to be something because i have already cut all the fabric into strips(2 and 3 inches). Maybe i will have something to show for this soon.

These fabrics are really pretty. How do you figure out how big it will be? Or do you worry about twin, queen, etc.?

With those fabrics it's sure to turn out pretty! I'm a go with the flow type quilter, sometimes I'm inspired by the fabric and then try and figure out a pattern that will best showcase it.

I have ideas, but usually when I can't sleep at night I think of what I could do with what I have.

It's when I get to the cutting board that things change. I have a great block there right now, that I have NO idea how I made it!
But it's fabulous to look at.
Now, I gotta do the math!

Sometimes the fabric tells me what it wants to be, sometimes my hands just piece, and other times, the pattern takes me on a journey.

I love the way you're listening to your heart and the colors are beautiful. A lot like the quilter sewing them!

Peace!

That is how I am! I very rarely follow a pattern. If I buy a pattern I end up altering it anyway. I just find a quilt I like and think "I can do that"

I usually go with a whim. I've tried to follow patterns but they usually feel too constraining to me. It's more fun to sew when your heart is in the piece.

Like you, I usually buy fabric I like (one print at a time, not often from matching collections) and then pull it out of my stash when I come up with something to use it for - and hope I have enough :)

Sometimes I wish I could make the same quilt multiple times to see what it looks like - then pick the best one and get the fabric from the other ones back :) I guess there's software to do that, but I'm too lazy for that (yeah, I'd rather make the multiple quilts, weird, eh??? :)

Cheers,
Christine

I rarely use patterns either and just keep working on it until I like the finished product. I find that if I am not thrilled with the quilt top that after I quilt it I end up loving it. Your fabrics are beautiful......can't wait to see what you come up with.

Pretty! I have a blue, yellow and orange quilt in the works right now, too!

I usually start with either an overall pattern idea, or a block I like. I'm not very good at cutting stuff up before I have a pretty good plan as to how it will all go back together!

I'm still a novice pattern follower, but I love that you used instinct and belief for this one. SO interested to see how it turns out!!!

I have been seeing a lot of orange/blue this week... must be the need for spring! I start with a germ of an idea from a spark somewhere like, hey, that would look great with that fabric I have... then it deviates at LOT as the project goes.

Can't wait to see what these grow up to be!

Pretty fabrics! I'm not sure what you mean about adding white, but I'm sure it will all be clear with your next update. Can't wait to see the progress!

I'm not a big pattern follower. I like the ones where I can just make scrappy blocks and then throw them all together in the end. I think I'm just basically lazy. ;-)

I copy other peoples' :)
I need practice picking out colors and choosing patterns, but have just decided that I'll learn by experience and not get too stressed over it. Hard to do when you've invested a lot of time and are using nice fabric though. I'll just keep copying your quilts :)
