knitting was a crafting challenge that i had not taken yet. Something about the two handed coordination was pretty intimidating. I got some great advice from my friend Mary who is a knitting queen. The things she makes are amazing and gorgeous. I got the yarn and the needles and the book she recommended and i got to work. Fortunately my neighbor knits as well and could get me through my first challenge, casting on...which is the first step and without it you can't get anything made. I was getting nowhere fast!!
Once i figured it out i started practicing some of the stitches i discovered that purling makes my hand fall asleep so i kept doing a knit stitch!! That turned into this little number...i decided it would be a little "scarflette" for Avery. But it was a little boring so i added a ruffled edge and some buttons to hold it closed. Chris says it is like a victorian collar...very queen like he said. Somehow, that seems fitting for the Avery. She wore it quite a bit today...she was not feeling well and i think it was making her feel a little better. There is something about a homemade cozy item that makes you feel better...whether that is a blanket, a scarf or even a hat.

YAY LESLIE!!!! I feel like I've found my long lost sister :) See my blog for an explanation of how/why I ended up on facebook (with which, after only 3 days, I already have a love/hate relationship). It's been a long long time so hopefully we can catch up gradually by reading bloggys!! I'll have to pick your brain for homeschooling advice in 3-4 yrs :)
I love that last picture. Chris is right, it looks queenly. Great job for your first knitting project. The ruffle adds a softer touch to it.
I came by to feed your turtles today and found your new live traffic feed- that's a cool find, dear friend. I noticed you had a visitor from Canada... could it be Prince Edward Island? I am having an Anne of Green Gables party in a couple weeks where everyone has to wear puffed sleeves (for the youth girls mostly- because none of these senior girls know Anne). Didn't you visit Prince Edward Island recently?
oh how i wish that i had been to PEI ever! I dream about it. Can i be invited to your Anne party...i promise that i would wear puffed sleeves
Pretty! Love the pics of the outing, too.
That would make a great costume, just turn the scarf around. Can I go to your friend's Anne party too! Maybe we should just all have an Anne day.
You sly thing. I thought you had decided against knitting when you took your sewing machine out. Hands falling asleep is not godd--are you knitting continental or english style? (Do you hold the yarn in your right hand and "throw" it around the needle or do you hold it in your left hand and "pick" it up with your needle?) It looks fabulous and love the trim--good job friend!
Look at mary being all technical and stuff. :o) Kudos to you girl. I dont know if I will ever have the coordination. Gramma is coming in December. Maybe I will give it another try when she is here.
Sarah- I wish I could go to your party. I just watched Anne again on Sunday...I dont know how many times I have watched it. Oh I HATE The Continuing Story by the way...makes me mad.
I agree with Chris and Mom and Colleen lol it does look like a queen collar and would definitely make a great costume item like Colleen said. It looks great Leslie and I can't wait to see what else you come up with. I need to figure out a way to crochet while nursing lol. Otherwise I'm never going to get ANY of my projects done it seems...
I love it. you should make some and sell them. When are you going to start your etsy shop??? It does look very Royal from the back.
Hey!....Can I come to the party? I'll be Marilla.
what you don't want to be rachel
I always believe "the more the merrier"... please come to my Anne of Green Gables party. Just wear the puffiest sleeves you can find... even you, Marilla... er, Grammie.
